Mandatory upgrade to PHP 8.1 on Kinsta

Questo contenuto è disponibile in Italiano

If you are one of our customers or manage a hosting space Kinsta you’ve undoubtedly received an important communication this week: it’s time to upgrade the PHP version of your site because active support for PHP 8.0 was ended more than a year ago, and security support (patches to fix security issues) ended on November 26, 2023.

In May, Kinsta will begin upgrading all sites remaining in PHP 8.0 to PHP 8.1. Here is the schedule:

  1. Tuesday, March 26: PHP 8.0 option for live sites will be dropped.
  2. Tuesday, April 23: PHP 8.0 option for Standard and Premium environments will be removed.
  3. Tuesday, May 7: Sites still using PHP 8.0 will be upgraded to PHP 8.1.

WordPress sites are based on the PHP language and every year outdated versions of the language are replaced by newer versions.
We strongly recommend that you update the PHP version of your sitebefore March 26, 2024 so that you do not run into possible disruptions.
You can take action on your own by following the Kinsta step-by-step guide or by reading the advice below, or you can book an intervention with one of our specialized technicians who will follow you step by step through the upgrade!

Tips

Necessary condition for successful operation with PHP 8.1 are: WordPress, plugins, themes and features sufficiently up-to-date to support the language.
Often sites do not give problems at the transition but sometimes an outdated plugin is enough to generate a fatal error.

The best way to make sure that upgrading from PHP 8.0 to 8.1 does not disrupt the site’s functions is to test the changes in a staging environment, then upgrade the live site when you are confident that the site is working properly.

If using PHP 8.1 in staging the site crashes, you can solve the problem by disabling one plugin at a time.
If you disable a particular plugin and the site resumes working, you have found the problem to be solved.
If plugins are not the problem, try disabling the theme.
If a theme or plugin version is not compatible with PHP 8.1, contact the developer to find out if there is a timeline for compatibility.
If not, look for another plugin or theme to replace it.
