Questo contenuto è disponibile in Italiano

If your website is being hosted on Kinsta you will certainly have received, over time, several email communications from the hosting provider: incoming news and enhancements, alerts about vulnerabilities discovered in plugins in use, possible PHP inefficiencies or errors, and, most importantly and the subject of this article, the renewal of your expiring SSL certificate.

First, make sure you receive (and read) the emails Kinsta sends you
but, above all, don't be alarmed🙂

Renewing an SSL certificate

The SSL certificate (essential for ensuring security and quality to your website) is normally renewed once a year, at a specific deadline.
This renewal is performed by a technician, or by the customer himself if he has the skills, by inserting in the DNS zone of the site’s domain a TXT record provided by the hosting provider.
After a few minutes, if the procedure has been correctly performed, the SSL certificate will be renewed for the following year.

Is it possible to automate the renewal of the SSL certificate?

The answer is yes! Thanks to theCloudflare integration with Kinsta, which offers speed, security and many other benefits, SSL certificates will be renewed automatically without you having to add new records from year to year or make changes to your DNS zone.
This allows for faster and more streamlined renewal for our customers, but still as secure as before.

Due to a change in the requirements for renewal of SSL certificates., renewal procedures are changing for all web hosting providers.
Kinsta, once again, proves to stay one step ahead of the competition, offering updates, convenience and benefits to its customers!

The renewal procedure may be slightly different, depending on whether your domain uses the DNS from Kinsta or third-party nameservers.
Here is an overview of the updated SSL renewal procedure for new and existing Kinsta domains:

  • Kinsta’s DNS: If your website uses Kinsta’s DNS along with one of our free Cloudflare SSL certificates, you are already set for automatic renewal! You won’t have to do anything to renew the certificate as long as your domain continues to use Kinsta’s DNS. Contact us to find out what your current DNS configuration is and how you can fully utilize the benefits of Kinsta!
  • Custom SSL: Kinsta also supports custom SSL certificates.
However, to renew an SSL certificate purchased through a third-party service, you will need to operate outside of Kinsta with a technical intervention.
  • Third-party nameservers: if a third-party DNS server is used along with Kinsta’s Cloudflare SSL, we will need to add a one-time CNAME record that allows us to update the TXT record when needed for SSL validation.
Thereafter, renewal of the domain’s SSL will be automatic.

As is often the case, the best solution is the simplest: by combining Kinsta's built-in DNS features with a free SSL from Cloudflare, the problem of SSL renewals will be a distant memory.

So.

How to enable automatic renewal of SSL certificate?

The DNS management offered by Kinsta has many advantages, in addition to the ability to automatically renew SSL certificates: it is a superior Anycast DNS service based on Amazon Route53, which is among the fastest DNS services in the world and also supports latency-based routing and geolocation to ensure fast response times.
