Kinsta: Upgrade to PHP 8

Questo contenuto è disponibile in Italiano

WordPress sites are based on the PHP language.
Each year, outdated versions of the language are replaced by newer versions. Active PHP 7.4 support ended at the end of last year, and security support ends today, November 28, 2022.
Managed hosting provider Kinsta starting January 24, 2023, will upgrade sites still using PHP 7.4 to PHP 8.0.
automatically. We strongly recommend that youupgrade thePHPof the sitebefore January 24, 2023, either by acting on your own or by booking an intervention.

Tips

Necessary condition for successful operation with PHP 8 are: WordPress, plugins, themes and features sufficiently up-to-date to support the language.
Often sites don’t give problems at the transition but sometimes an outdated plugin is enough to generate a fatal error.

The best way to make sure that upgrading from PHP 7.4 to 8.0 does not disrupt the site’s functions is totest the changes in a staging environment, then update the live site when you are confident that the site is working properly.

If using PHP 8.0 in staging the site crashes, you can solve the problem by disabling one plugin at a time.
If you disable a particular plugin and the site resumes working, you have found the problem to be solved.
If plugins are not the problem, try disabling the theme.

If the version of a theme or plugin is not compatible with PHP 8, contact the developer to find out if there is a timeline for compatibility.
If not, look for another plugin or theme to replace it.

Assisted upgrade

It is possible to request support to make the transition.
This eventuality involves 2 steps:

1) VERIFICATION ON INTERNSHIP AND TEST: $100.00

  • Check for PHP errors on version 7.4 before upgrading.
  • Verification of PHP 8 on the stage area of the hosting service, to “quickly” verify the functionality of the site.
This is followed by an end-client check, and in case of approval, the transition to production with PHP 8.
  • Checking for PHP errors on version 8.

If we detect that something is not working well with this first phase, we move on to the second phase, the cost of which is added to the previous one.

2) I SOLVE THE COMPATIBILITY PROBLEMS OF PLUGIN OR THEME

This second phase must be budgeted on a case-by-case basis, so the initial 100€ covers the cost of the analysis.
